<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know that it's strange to claim to love metal, but I also love concrete and the scent of a good skunk. I believe that skunks have gotten a bad rap. They smell a little bit like rubber bands. No one ever smells a box of rubber bands and exclaim "Ewwwwww! I smell rubber bands!" I believe we have been conditioned to think that skunks stink. A friend suggested that maybe we have Saturday morning cartoons to blame. Who knows where the little critters got the bad reputation. Back to the subject at hand--</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also love tea and enjoy collecting cute little metal tea tins. Since I drink so much tea and I can't throw the tins away, I have more than I know what do with, which necessitates a brainstorming session with myself. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is one of my favorite little cups that I found at Goodwill. I hand wash it because I love it so much. I also don't leave it outside for weeks. I take a little cream with my tea, making it look like coffee. Coffee gags me, so tea is my coffee and I feel grownup when I drink my tea with cream. I insist on drinking from a dainty little tea cup, especially on Saturday mornings. I digress. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEHW_3UBbZ0oenn3tqNhosv8rh_8YTmT2cQEROu9kuucRMbdDGS1Vn4U4IC0jroSCSVn_jQB02oELzGOAphz5gxzJYnW3uThnEwk0HHboMZTpjhLVkAAXFgmvpqCKo2n-rr0hNwpD7XPw/s1600/image.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEHW_3UBbZ0oenn3tqNhosv8rh_8YTmT2cQEROu9kuucRMbdDGS1Vn4U4IC0jroSCSVn_jQB02oELzGOAphz5gxzJYnW3uThnEwk0HHboMZTpjhLVkAAXFgmvpqCKo2n-rr0hNwpD7XPw/s1600/image.png" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Back to the Tea Tins. I have been collecting these tins for some time and wanted to try stripping them of their paint and then repurposing them. I could leave them as is, but they distract me. They aren't cute. Someone, I won't mention any names, insisted that stripping would not work and it would be a failed project. I am always up for a good challenge, so I pulled out the big guns.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXL_PAdgEF8pDn8ZwUeQdqNwXrcWk1h9iv21bfYY2UZ5kmgrLYwOS1nperJf2ZdjCLthNlI4S-T3TQahntT5Dndf9d6lYh06CfVSWeN26uy1ZqodufcyBqpJntrC6YmRSzEv6rr6UMWIE/s1600/image-2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXL_PAdgEF8pDn8ZwUeQdqNwXrcWk1h9iv21bfYY2UZ5kmgrLYwOS1nperJf2ZdjCLthNlI4S-T3TQahntT5Dndf9d6lYh06CfVSWeN26uy1ZqodufcyBqpJntrC6YmRSzEv6rr6UMWIE/s1600/image-2.png" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was all I needed, plus some steel-wool, and wet sandpaper for the stubborn paint. And a scraping thing--whatever that is called. I think its called a scraper. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used an old paint brush and painted on the striper really super thick. This particular tin started peeling pretty quickly. The black tins were not as obedient, but some steel-wool and wet sandpaper helped. Let the stripper set for a bit to begin eating the paint, but don't let it dry. Try letting the stripper set for 10 or 15 minutes. You may have to repeat the process. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj01VQzLqM-mZU8ypm_OW86gABOiOLpbj32abgyHkR-q_tz3KYdSjPXg9KBel-3ykBExB7i2U_ol3gUcnwByXQmxdH9jXg95EraDCPtq3FPFEFtMR5kv_i4uKUFgJGa3a_NJYp35ZN1oPQ/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj01VQzLqM-mZU8ypm_OW86gABOiOLpbj32abgyHkR-q_tz3KYdSjPXg9KBel-3ykBExB7i2U_ol3gUcnwByXQmxdH9jXg95EraDCPtq3FPFEFtMR5kv_i4uKUFgJGa3a_NJYp35ZN1oPQ/s1600/photo+4.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stripper is powerful, so be sure to wear protective gloves. In my estimation, the key here is to wear two left gloves. It must be the secret to my super successful stripping. I was told it couldn't be done! Although the black paint was a bear, I stripped the heck out of these tins. After the tins were mostly clean, I used a little steel wool and wet sandpaper.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I could have spent a little more time to get the black ones really clean, but I like the haunting look that the little paint evokes. Plus, I am a Shabby Chic kind of girl. </div>

And there you have it! Pretty tins that you can repurpose for so many things. Here are just a few ideas for your newly designed tins:</div>

Just checking to see if you are still reading this post. 'Pickles' is a funny word and I wanted to wake you up. Hello! Please don't put pickles in your tin. And please don't do drugs. <br />
<br />
Now go repurpose something and make something useful! Make some Splendid Trash! <br />

<br />
I love <a href="http://synergydrinks.com/index.php/products#classic-synergy" target="_blank">Kombucha</a>. But O my, the stuff is expensive. My co-worker bought me one as a treat and now I am doomed to drink the stuff until I die. Good thing it's healthy, otherwise I would never forgive the girl who started this whole obsession. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkEn-2uNltj8C0G3-2A9vKlpi01aZ4UOzNsDz9GxnXrE9GMCafxn-8RatXZxZbzpi7tOzjZi9tdVlmfIDZ5xal28FXXwdqv13ANc4VSXr3mkDP-kc5BYVr-Cz_CSujriQBpROAgKSiEyg/s1600/IMG_2865.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkEn-2uNltj8C0G3-2A9vKlpi01aZ4UOzNsDz9GxnXrE9GMCafxn-8RatXZxZbzpi7tOzjZi9tdVlmfIDZ5xal28FXXwdqv13ANc4VSXr3mkDP-kc5BYVr-Cz_CSujriQBpROAgKSiEyg/s1600/IMG_2865.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
So now that I have this habit, I figured out a way not to feel so guilty. Yes, the bottle is glass and it can be recycled, but better yet, reuse it in a new and pretty way. <br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Have you ever tried glass etching? </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
Glass etching is fun and easy. I can even do it by myself and I usually need my husband to help with everything. Etching makes me feel smart and creative. And Happy!<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Shopping List:</span><br />
<a href="http://www.michaels.com/armour-etch-glass-etching-cream/M10208713.html#q=armour+etch&start=1" target="_blank">Etching Acid</a><br />
Pen<br />
Clear contact paper<br />
Sharp exacto-knife<br />
Tape<br />
Small paint brush<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Step One:</span><br />
<br />
Choose a cute font and type the words or letters you want to etch. You may have to experiment with the size or <i>bold</i> your text. For my design, I chose the font <i><b>Big Caslon</b></i>, the size is <i>144 </i>for the 'H' & 'O' and the '2' is size <i>96.</i> Testing fonts and sizing could take hours. Soooo much fun! Print your text. You can also etch designs instead of text. This is where you can really go crazy! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCci43O7yuy4Adwz7Gte39lNT6dHvf5U1xryxWxZ0nWTE0LsQ8dyI34cbo_3CmoPrlIsoCoKWJxzHH6duD9igTl6-U3StGqGYTnkdnGmVlYxYp-_fA2mxz1115f2lfgpENGiBJgUtnzII/s1600/IMG_2895.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCci43O7yuy4Adwz7Gte39lNT6dHvf5U1xryxWxZ0nWTE0LsQ8dyI34cbo_3CmoPrlIsoCoKWJxzHH6duD9igTl6-U3StGqGYTnkdnGmVlYxYp-_fA2mxz1115f2lfgpENGiBJgUtnzII/s1600/IMG_2895.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Step Two: </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
Place the contact paper over the text and tape in place. Trace with a non-smudgy pen--not a felt tip. For this design you will have to move the contact paper to trace the '2' so that is lower. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxLkbxUuR4RkzVXljdta3GoJNF0L7GHIxDg3p83QLf08qHiGxwQdrD7rLEmdwatKUf2hbp77xhyphenhyphendw1gdUHQpAe8b9bDYdMIP5gwhvSxYfofBeIbVHybcGC8BQ7ts9rxGz7mcKyIXyGgD8/s1600/IMG_2898.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxLkbxUuR4RkzVXljdta3GoJNF0L7GHIxDg3p83QLf08qHiGxwQdrD7rLEmdwatKUf2hbp77xhyphenhyphendw1gdUHQpAe8b9bDYdMIP5gwhvSxYfofBeIbVHybcGC8BQ7ts9rxGz7mcKyIXyGgD8/s1600/IMG_2898.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Step Three:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
Peel the contact paper backing and position on your glass bottle as desired. Carefully smooth out all the bubbles. <br />
<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Step Four:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
With an exacto-knife, trace the pen lines, pressing firmly enough to cut in one, clean line. In other words, you want it to be as straight as possible, not hacked. I am not that great at this part, but you will improve with practice. Don't fret, just do it! Once you trace the letters, use the point of the blade to pick out the contact paper from inside the lettering. If you missed a spot with the blade and it doesn't come out cleanly, recut the area instead of pulling and stretching the contact paper. <br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Step Five:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
Paint on the etching acid and let sit for 10 minutes. The bottle directions instruct 5 minutes, but we have found that 10 is better. We also discovered that it's best to lay the bottle flat instead of up right. This will prevent the acid from running onto the glass. <br />

We love trash day. I remember the first time picking trash. My friend was with me and I saw a sweet table in my neighbors trash. It was after dark, and I laughed all the way home as we carried the table down the street. She didn't know what was so funny and she kept telling me to be quiet! I felt a mix of embarrassment and a rush of adrenaline. It's the ultimate high! <br />

We bought some lumber the same size as the rotten boards and drilled holes for the new bolts. Rick also rounded the edges with a plane so that it would be kind on the booty. Rick chose pine wood--less than $20 bucks. </div>

We found some really great textured metallic paint by Rust-oleum that made the frame look galvanized. If you use textured paint, alway prime with a similar color since the textured paint doesn't cover very well. We didn't and Rick had to go back and retouch with some silver paint. We were in a hurry to get this project finished so that we could sit on it. We are not perfectionist and embrace our inner hack. Just don't look too closely at our stuff. Flaws abound, and we are fine with that. </div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">I Have a Problem!</span></h2>
We have established long ago that I act as if I lived through <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Depression" target="_blank">The Great Depression</a>. I have not, but my grandmother has. She was as frugal as they come, and became more so as she got older. I, on the other hand, am a paradox. A strange creature who can't make up her mind. I am frugal, I am excessive. Whatever!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<i> </i>This woman moves me. These children kill me. <br />
<i> </i> <br />
<h2>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I Get a Thrill!</span></h2>
For me, it's a hobby to make things last a little longer. Stick it to the manufacturer and get more use than they intended. I love the little thrill of digging out every last bit of my <a href="http://www.burtsbees.com/Beeswax-Lip-Balm/beeswaxLipBalm,default,sc.html" target="_blank">Burt's Bees lip balm</a> with a sharp object. You would not believe how much is left in that tube after you use it up. But that's another post!<br />

You can buy these <a href="http://www.target.com/p/scotch-brite-non-scratch-scour-pad/-/A-13129391#prodSlot=medium_1_30&term=scotch+brite" target="_blank">Scotch-Brite Scour Pads</a> for about 4 bucks at <a href="http://www.target.com/#?lnk=icon_t_spc_1_0">Target.</a> These come in a pack of 4. But they are unnecessarily large. You only need a bit of scrubbing power to get the job done. To get more bang for your buck, cut them in quarters! Now you have 16 scour pads that take up less space and is still able to eliminate your stubborn baked-in food stuff. <br />

What a lovely pile of green, that will help you save green and be a little more green! If you know what I mean!Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14141981840012932989noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3119970449412947322.post-5757921272351129702014-02-02T18:36:00.000-08:002014-05-24T16:59:23.711-07:00Thinking Outside of the Box and Bringing it In!<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Hello, Beloved Readers! </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: xx-small;">(all five of you!)</span><br />
<br />
It's been a while. I have some excuses, but they are boring excuses! So, to my former co-worker, I dedicate this post to YOU! There were some who thought we were sisters (we are both white chicks). So here it is, <a href="http://libbybh.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Libby</a>! This one is for YOU! Yes, YOU inspired me! It only took me an hour to sign-in to blogspot, so you owe me an hour of your life. To be spent however I want!<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Splendid Trash!</span><br />
<br />
So, Rick and I found this really cool salvage shop. Well, he found it and I tagged along. I would tell you its name, but it doesn't have one. For real! A shop without a name! I was trying to tag the place on Instagram and so I asked the guy, "What's this placed called?"<br />
<br />
"I don't know" he said, "Well, it used to be <i>Junque</i>, but somebody else took that name. So now <a href="http://www.mapquest.com/maps?address=3519%20S%20Broadway&city=Saint%20Louis&state=MO&zipcode=63118" target="_blank">it doesn't have a name</a>." This place is a goldmine! You would think these guys read marketing books and learned how to sell their stuff, but I think they are just doing what they love. <br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The Statue Without a Head!</span><br />
<br />
The main guy looked like an actor playing the part of a homeless dude. Super grunge. I wanted this headless statue, but when I asked him the price, he gave a long pause. "She's a beauty, isn't she?" Then he went into this long story about how it was his dad's and it bothered the neighbors that his dad a collection of statues, so some kids vandalized it, but he still has the head. Here it comes, I thought. The price is a gazillion coins. Nope, it's not for sale. Then he told a story about how <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Cassilly" target="_blank">Bob Cassilly</a>--of the City Museum, rescued a statue by Michael Angelo from a crazed maniac with a sledge hammer in Paris when he was a teen. Then he told the story of how Yoko and John Lennon met over a statue. He had a lot of statue stories and he wasn't even selling the one we wanted. I am not sure if these stories are true, but we were smitten by the homeless shop owner.<br />
<br />
This guy charmed the socks off us! We bought some stuff! And we will be back! Oh, and there was this other guy who worked there--he did Not look homeless. He was like <a href="http://www.askmen.com/celebs/men/entertainment_60/78_vin_diesel.html" target="_blank">Vin Diesel's </a>twin. For real! And there was a woman (wife of the homeless guy? Mother of Vin?) who told us about the building--this really cool area where Anheuser Busch used to get their ice. This place was amazing. We will be back to buy this crazy French Chandelier. It looked haunted! Beautifully haunted!<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Bring the Outside Box, In!</span><br />
<br />
So, we found something really cool. As you may know, we like to think outside of the box when it comes to home decor. So, the box that goes outside--why not bring it <i>in</i> for a really cool place to stash bills to be paid, or mail to go out. How's that for thinking outside of the box? Checkout the character on this beauty! There must have been Ten mailboxes to choose from. Standard issue. <br />
<br />

<br />
Rick hung it for me right by the front door. I will come home from work, hang my keys on the hook, sort my mail and then put the <i>actionables</i> into the <i>inside</i> mailbox. How's that for a system? We just bought a new light switch plate on eBay. This one is looking a little out of place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span id="goog_2005756361"></span><span id="goog_2005756362"></span><br />
It took me like, two more hours to post these pictures. Libby, now you owe me THREE hours! I had multiple technical difficulties. Loading! Ugh! Then I tried to remove the red splotch at the bottom of this picture. Ugh! The red stain is the remainder of a my bag that I keep by the door. I used my mac photo shop to the best of my abilities in an effort to remove the red. I give myself a D+. Oh, well. Please ignore the spot! Let's pretend it's a rose. <br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">More Splendid Trash--Teaser!</span><br />
<br />
More to come from the store with no name! What do you think this is going to be? Think OUTSIDE Of THE BOX! <br />

Yes, I care about the environment, but there are other reasons for my earthy ways.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><o:p>It's Complicated</o:p><o:p> </o:p></span><br />
I have the mentality of having lived through the depression.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I did not, but my grandparents did.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some of their approach to life has rubbed off on me—although selectively.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Gas prices—I never pay attention.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Parking meters—I will walk a mile to avoid feeding quarters. I am a world of contradictions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I shun wasting food to my detriment, but I will spend a weeks pay on a good meal.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Twice I gave myself food poisoning to avoid waisting the contents of my refrigerator.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Did I learn my lesson?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Yes! I got a meal and was able to easily skip a few more resulting in unexpected savings and lost a couple of pounds to boot. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Hence, there is always a Silver Lining!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><br />
<br />
<o:p><span style="font-size: large;">Linen Vs. Paper </span></o:p><br />
Paper towels are unsightly and uncomfortable to use on the face in place of a cloth napkin.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I use rags for wiping up spills and towels for drying hands and cloth napkins for meals.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Even when we have a house full of guests I use linen.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Oddly enough, I enjoy folding napkins and love the sight of them in my cabinet.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><br />
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTqsK76LEkUovN3f8aGFH4UMIsIVyCwTKm7dqRNGWqBoIRUG2c6OhCGiJDReIPBDX5gEi16KTLqjdzYD_dEXwaEd-LlZ1GkIjgL2wx3VQSaqHXnvBtvv350PBJ1Hiqd-HnFrDBT9er99Q/s1600/photo-71.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTqsK76LEkUovN3f8aGFH4UMIsIVyCwTKm7dqRNGWqBoIRUG2c6OhCGiJDReIPBDX5gEi16KTLqjdzYD_dEXwaEd-LlZ1GkIjgL2wx3VQSaqHXnvBtvv350PBJ1Hiqd-HnFrDBT9er99Q/s320/photo-71.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span>
<br />
<o:p><span style="font-size: large;">Germs Are Gross </span></o:p><br />
Here is another factoid about me.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>One thing I hate more than waste is a damp towel from multiple uses in a guest bathroom.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If I were to send in a <a href="http://www.postsecret.com/" target="_blank">PostSecret</a> , it would be that I rarely use towels in people's bathrooms.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I can be quite creative in how I dry my hands in your home. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I will use the fancy, ‘do not disturb’, never-been-touched towels with the monogramming.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Or if it’s a nasty bathroom, I will use Toilet paper, Kleenex or my own pants.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> As a last resort, I will use the back corner of the hand towel. </span>I have issues.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There! Now, I don’t need to send in my postcard—once again, saving paper!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And at least I don’t bring my own towels to your house.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Wait!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>That’s a great idea!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Problem Solved, Beautifully!</span><o:p> </o:p><br />
For my own home, I got the answer to the scanky hand towel by attending a party at a friend’s house.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They installed a paper towel holder in their bathroom.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>No germs—but the wastefulness kept me up at night.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I liked the <em>idea</em> of paper towels in the bathroom for guests so that my germaphobe friends can avoid drying their hands on my curtains.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I am sure there are a ton of people like me who have an aversion to using a community hand towel.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But as you know, I am earthy!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>So, I bought some wash clothes, cut off the tags—they are unsightly—and put them in a cute basket.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Then I had my daughter make this ‘guest towel’ sign and added a matching ‘soiled linen’ basket.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> Guest have a clean, mini towel to dry their hands! </span>Now I sleep better knowing that my friends and family don’t have to wipe their hands on their pants or spread H1N1 to a house full of people.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Problem solved!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><br />
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-size: x-large; text-align: left;">
One Last Pretty Tip!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I bought inexpensive wash clothes from Target. They fade with washing, so make sure you cycle them through and put the freshly laundered towels at the bottom of the stack so they all get used equally and fade equally. It's the details that matter. Trust me. </div>

I am in Galveston, Texas visiting my daughter and her husband. <br />
<br />
I have a little something that I can tell you about that might inspire you. Once again, I didn't make it, but I commissioned Rick to make it. He likes it when I do that. <br />
<br />
We were presented with a problem, which may be relatible to you. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsOUDc-tRZf93RgVXbTsSm2fk6hQ7GuSLfmgMk49MF9dds4J_sTMIAbfJyXfbG9QqguP6obYoXdKgWlHFparJsOE0vT8jcZXKcdTeZoD2Neh5uamK_xPwwFPfkTj9OWozbuPg67qGPe30/s1600/photo-63.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsOUDc-tRZf93RgVXbTsSm2fk6hQ7GuSLfmgMk49MF9dds4J_sTMIAbfJyXfbG9QqguP6obYoXdKgWlHFparJsOE0vT8jcZXKcdTeZoD2Neh5uamK_xPwwFPfkTj9OWozbuPg67qGPe30/s320/photo-63.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Refilling the toilet paper holder is a pain and a hassle. Who wants to refill the roll when there are so many other important things to do. Never mind that if you are sitting there with nothing else to do, you might as well make yourself useful. It's called multitasking, people.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDuQy4pVy44_Yg7NZq-neMdj_uFKxx13uMrug6ELtQCSVGkcI3CmFlOJIKKguH2FGGwze2zF8P-tdom3T_n6WLT0lL55Jwwk64Ift1HxGXxmwzA_XPZ0QoXaiUAoDY4Yd5wDTWfhYv_Ho/s1600/photo-64.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDuQy4pVy44_Yg7NZq-neMdj_uFKxx13uMrug6ELtQCSVGkcI3CmFlOJIKKguH2FGGwze2zF8P-tdom3T_n6WLT0lL55Jwwk64Ift1HxGXxmwzA_XPZ0QoXaiUAoDY4Yd5wDTWfhYv_Ho/s320/photo-64.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Is this a familiar scene at your home, toilet paper resting on top of the holder? Yep! That's the style.<br />
So, after much cajoling, I convinced my husband to make a really cool toilet paper holder out of pipes for our upstairs bathroom! I love this pipe material, I don't know why. It's very industrial, which I love. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHeaf8GTyu7qmTNLOfuv9OQY9Aw2mg8lBZ5Qukx8k0C_LHpyGqEzCbaPAk3T7FUoWwZYoipHgIoBauOFb4KfaCAC7kmtFXpOlZDRU492RKX1fukUvNZocu0AFqKqAvQ1VUSW-7VUUWMDY/s1600/photo-65.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHeaf8GTyu7qmTNLOfuv9OQY9Aw2mg8lBZ5Qukx8k0C_LHpyGqEzCbaPAk3T7FUoWwZYoipHgIoBauOFb4KfaCAC7kmtFXpOlZDRU492RKX1fukUvNZocu0AFqKqAvQ1VUSW-7VUUWMDY/s320/photo-65.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
The beauty of this baby is that the refill process is a no brainier. Easy Peasy. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbS2Q67nyPYIz2qHgvhAHco2z24MnYTn8crwXGHerRUQtNvI1PNREFtWyTza3nAD8iq1Pn_PSP_WCTgjcaEvyt0vaTKUPkGqDAen5eaPD5nlNJEebL0sGmLDrfe5b1IKAO06SqHQPD2Tw/s1600/photo-66.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbS2Q67nyPYIz2qHgvhAHco2z24MnYTn8crwXGHerRUQtNvI1PNREFtWyTza3nAD8iq1Pn_PSP_WCTgjcaEvyt0vaTKUPkGqDAen5eaPD5nlNJEebL0sGmLDrfe5b1IKAO06SqHQPD2Tw/s320/photo-66.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Admittedly, this is not desirable style for everyone. It's not for the faint of heart, to be sure. I like its rugged nature and 'here to stay' presence. It's something a sheepherder could appreciate, or perhaps a extreme couponer. Or maybe just me. I like it, but if you insist, go to the Home Depot and get a one-step toilet paper holder to end the madness at your house. This little project saved our marriage.</div>

I tried to hawk this sweet little table last week to no avail.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDNdKfOQazfjklHd9HDHb2xeMxM9FKF2sOvvA28rth5wZ2S3ZvdNXvJgp58hwC6dFNKwZ8tt9NV53jtedrO8nF1RVJFGFPeCfytyV-_666jAmXgOXGPES_RfgKliU2YKyLAh0VVUnuNmA/s1600/photo-40.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDNdKfOQazfjklHd9HDHb2xeMxM9FKF2sOvvA28rth5wZ2S3ZvdNXvJgp58hwC6dFNKwZ8tt9NV53jtedrO8nF1RVJFGFPeCfytyV-_666jAmXgOXGPES_RfgKliU2YKyLAh0VVUnuNmA/s320/photo-40.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGJoTx4n4TRpOoi9ScT-sBx9klBuCMV9PAl5KjPYNaBUVRAyj33lMSI-xmiZn2EPq0eucwsnTDVxS4ekNH-dtdIruWwtIn55uUExRuXLMeJxmHcYbeeW5MW5yYziFoWAQDYYPnriaFmE4/s1600/photo-33.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGJoTx4n4TRpOoi9ScT-sBx9klBuCMV9PAl5KjPYNaBUVRAyj33lMSI-xmiZn2EPq0eucwsnTDVxS4ekNH-dtdIruWwtIn55uUExRuXLMeJxmHcYbeeW5MW5yYziFoWAQDYYPnriaFmE4/s320/photo-33.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Maybe the electrical outlet is too distracting. I would give this photo a 'B'. I also had a few close-ups attached to the ad. My description went something like this: <br />
<br />
Shabby Chic side table. Features beautiful leather-like insert and a handy cubby for storing books, magazines or a basket. <br />
<br />
I included the measurements and $30.00 cash price tag. <br />
<br />
Not one bite! I had multiple inquiries on the other side table and sold it right away. So, I had two options. One, lower the price. Two, change the wording and try again. I already had a lot invested with the walking next door in the dark and hauling it into the house. Plus hiring my husband to paint it for free. So you can understand why I had to charge the full 30 bucks. The change I made to the ad was minimal:<br />
<br />

Finding something in the trash, fixing it up and then selling it on Craigslist. It's so exciting! Mystery, intrigue, danger, with a feel good ending! <br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Mystery</span><br />
Why did someone throw away this little treasure? It just needs a little TLC, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: xx-small;">and elbow grease. </span>I love the smaller sized objects. You can quickly pull your vehicle over to the curb, swipe the discarded items and throw them in your trunk all before the neighbors witness such low-level activity--or before they change their mind. You wouldn't believe the cool stuff people throw away. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTK6kzWWc-H8luheVyOdkey6O2dWTW6An6ovPZuII4Bsc1Q_7_lZqZxYrdvKAuIxY_9iSLK1MwCfRdGeRrBACLfA_m2AeiYU8Z1mLwNZT1nrGHQZEPFgEHohsthAk3Okre43evFtGoijk/s1600/photo-41.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTK6kzWWc-H8luheVyOdkey6O2dWTW6An6ovPZuII4Bsc1Q_7_lZqZxYrdvKAuIxY_9iSLK1MwCfRdGeRrBACLfA_m2AeiYU8Z1mLwNZT1nrGHQZEPFgEHohsthAk3Okre43evFtGoijk/s320/photo-41.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This little nightstand was missing a little piece of wood on the right lower corner and the drawer pull. No big deal. My 'before' picture could use a little more forethought and skill. A true 'before' and 'after' would showcase the missing chunk of wood. I should work on that, but imagine the worst. </div>
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Intrigue</span><br />
Neighbor looks out the window, sees me driving slowly by her house, stop, slowly backup and put the car in park. I quickly get out and examine her discarded object, grab the nightstand, pop my trunk and throw it in, and zoom away. She wonders, "What is that crazy neighbor doing with my trash again? Now what on earth is she going to do with that broken, ugly o'l thang? Maybe I should leave her a sandwich and aluminum cans." Now, she is intrigued!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWctjGf37LytE-aKyYNKS2rC48W6gVkC0WM-Fx2QLM7Jz5BqI7pHp4i05a9vDTFRU_V2LyCxm9iqWLdHgRXXlLDRhyphenhyphen7joq-Lp11m2P8Ke8ocXh3ULNx_EmvtLSwP3i4clY7vkMwgdkiBA/s1600/photo-45.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWctjGf37LytE-aKyYNKS2rC48W6gVkC0WM-Fx2QLM7Jz5BqI7pHp4i05a9vDTFRU_V2LyCxm9iqWLdHgRXXlLDRhyphenhyphen7joq-Lp11m2P8Ke8ocXh3ULNx_EmvtLSwP3i4clY7vkMwgdkiBA/s320/photo-45.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Suspense</span><br />
What will it look like when it's finished? Will anyone want it? How much should we sell it for? Or, should we keep it for ourselves? Gift it? What shall we do? It's a nail biter! A cliffhanger!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBci081i1rZ4Mwp88A6X-os5SjoGrugcjDHMUeJgj3nN5MBmU4wJiBlDR97YUyoIISFGpS8l4cMw7eE1x9VdoCTnB_yuTnY3HCLTjm6YevVmCgpFqIJVdDVeMpfgqbxMKbffQV0ves7LI/s1600/photo-42.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBci081i1rZ4Mwp88A6X-os5SjoGrugcjDHMUeJgj3nN5MBmU4wJiBlDR97YUyoIISFGpS8l4cMw7eE1x9VdoCTnB_yuTnY3HCLTjm6YevVmCgpFqIJVdDVeMpfgqbxMKbffQV0ves7LI/s320/photo-42.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Danger</span><br />
Everyone knows the stories of 'The Craigslist Killer' or the guy who robbed the fellow in a Craigslist scam. It's a risky business to be involved in, especially in my hood!<br />

Oh, boy! I can get in a lot of trouble at these events. But, one area of the sale that many bypass is the fabric samples, which is understandable. The pieces tend to be small or have huge chunks taken out of them. But, they are FREE! I love free stuff. So, for some reason, I passed up this damaged little treasure, and it haunted me. I thought about it for days. The sale was over and there was nothing I could do about it. I told my boss, described the piece and then she went out of her way to get it for me. It helps to know people. <br />
<br />
I love this blanket! It's fuzzy on one side and quilted on the other side. Hmmmm... I wonder what we can do with this 'trashed' blanket to make it a treasure. Think, think, think!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My twin, Karri, and I decided to cut off the bad part using a straight edge and a rotary wheel and then bind the raw edge. We planned to give it to her daughter, Karra, so we chose a black and white floral fabric that she would like. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Binding a raw edge is super fun and easy. Here's how:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisryoIcQvnImj9fZwFku08Z4nBfFHVpWhfTlDbDsHqx7fVqqmNI95YssmshbbGGKCrlwvLvvavLOQYZEps_2qeKnz2h0zeBaaCNuAI_kz_2dHL2Ur6O666TVnTIt9-DDQH6DmxfR1wgkI/s1600/photo-19.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisryoIcQvnImj9fZwFku08Z4nBfFHVpWhfTlDbDsHqx7fVqqmNI95YssmshbbGGKCrlwvLvvavLOQYZEps_2qeKnz2h0zeBaaCNuAI_kz_2dHL2Ur6O666TVnTIt9-DDQH6DmxfR1wgkI/s320/photo-19.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
Iron out the wrinkles. It's important! Trust me!</div>
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3tsr5GFGhoA1uMGBNKSGCJW1ArJ5IB29vurtedq0qC46kAsz4yLcBVRRPThjxd4eqTZOjr-5KR5KlwYGPSHPzInJrPOXNxlUCQJCrnx-YSm_7GT_fmiiWbTaDZVs4zHYoB5PvYDztTgY/s1600/photo-20.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3tsr5GFGhoA1uMGBNKSGCJW1ArJ5IB29vurtedq0qC46kAsz4yLcBVRRPThjxd4eqTZOjr-5KR5KlwYGPSHPzInJrPOXNxlUCQJCrnx-YSm_7GT_fmiiWbTaDZVs4zHYoB5PvYDztTgY/s320/photo-20.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
Measure the raw edge of the blanket and add a couple inches. If your fabric is not long enough, you can sew strips together. It's always better to make your strip a lot longer than the edge you want to bind. </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzKE0SzMG55XUismtOwt0YuQTwzoKmfIkzzMQsGyQCywZqhRdyNndrSiJKBwx2Mlrj2SXkJvy8bU30_oOnEbwmc8qEvdl0bs8FjaHIPsZg_E6drkSWItxQHBPE3nX7IR8V89CNppUSGdM/s1600/photo-21.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzKE0SzMG55XUismtOwt0YuQTwzoKmfIkzzMQsGyQCywZqhRdyNndrSiJKBwx2Mlrj2SXkJvy8bU30_oOnEbwmc8qEvdl0bs8FjaHIPsZg_E6drkSWItxQHBPE3nX7IR8V89CNppUSGdM/s320/photo-21.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Place the strips, right sides facing each other in the shape of an 'L'. Sew diagonally to the other edge. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cut the excess fabric about 1/4 inch or less from the stitching. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Press open the seam. You could just sew the two pieces end to end, but this method will eliminate some of the bulk. Trust me, it will look a whole lot more professional. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9UJ-boj_HXXNrQ5KYzw51M0UIsCT5ZvAZwtmOwIERgUrZQ5eL-p2irhWT1kjoWsLGAUIneApHSGaWP_LkJrYnNdH98NpvOcdkyY5YG-ueReHEKR419gMRxrZXim-ew5NO1qCwX7Q__SQ/s1600/photo-26.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9UJ-boj_HXXNrQ5KYzw51M0UIsCT5ZvAZwtmOwIERgUrZQ5eL-p2irhWT1kjoWsLGAUIneApHSGaWP_LkJrYnNdH98NpvOcdkyY5YG-ueReHEKR419gMRxrZXim-ew5NO1qCwX7Q__SQ/s320/photo-26.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fold the strip of fabric, lengthwise, wrong sides together and press. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWpV5slbwR4XK9D-CcpHOTs8cZBHdnC4hhOS9dUDDsRWZ-T7W2eMcyES_WGIqlWmqNLBTWvl-CiqraXF-PAJfqCHqu1UPsisfsz_AjG1Fx7QWz2VegBgPYkbmusZLaLrjSO6cORqZlIdM/s1600/photo-25.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWpV5slbwR4XK9D-CcpHOTs8cZBHdnC4hhOS9dUDDsRWZ-T7W2eMcyES_WGIqlWmqNLBTWvl-CiqraXF-PAJfqCHqu1UPsisfsz_AjG1Fx7QWz2VegBgPYkbmusZLaLrjSO6cORqZlIdM/s320/photo-25.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
To avoid a raw edge, unfold the fabric, and iron a hem about 1/4 inch. Then you fold it back, wrong sides together again and press again. <br />
Now you are ready to attach the binding to the blanket. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLmRZAkdtGAiw6mIvo7rmZ5dotWPTsaFm-q5tNPbcBHS3mDFPsMlSg3PYrFSERGHeIUGLxbZPEWk2Y0NILbKywFOKH97pEahEJyy5tcNoiZ73NPF7lDe-2Gni9lwJIvihrO3SRAvkBb4I/s1600/photo-28.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLmRZAkdtGAiw6mIvo7rmZ5dotWPTsaFm-q5tNPbcBHS3mDFPsMlSg3PYrFSERGHeIUGLxbZPEWk2Y0NILbKywFOKH97pEahEJyy5tcNoiZ73NPF7lDe-2Gni9lwJIvihrO3SRAvkBb4I/s320/photo-28.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Place the raw edges together, starting with the end that you just ironed that little 1/4 inch hem. I like to use the edge of my presser foot as the guide for my seam allowance. Your seam allowance need not be wide (less bulk). Sew as straight as possible! You can pin in place if you need help holding it all together.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When you get close to the end, fold in another 1/4 inch hem (but don't worry about ironing it) making sure that the edges are even. Finish sewing to the end and back stitch to lock your stitches in place. Now the binding is attached to the blanket. Yay! </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Press the binding toward the raw edge. The next part is my favorite! Hand sewing! </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fold the binding over to cover the raw edge. Use the line you stitched as your guide. You may pin in place, but I find that they get in the way. Use the hidden stitch to attach. If you don't know how to do the hidden stitch, google it. There are a ton of tutorials out there. </div>

One simple thing you can do is prepare your lunches at the beginning of your work week. This is just one sample of my meals for the week, less Friday.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4dzke1sXkPUTATU-l3dwLC21zMDZk36oOwi-J5WXzmMBxlIvKPMkg8htYt6lyzuExFA8YmF7DJkoB0etKK9ewfU5sp5aXJh67h_b8vktwXjCwIzbNRSCxfe9QeUfWJY921B5e9R3UglA/s1600/photo-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4dzke1sXkPUTATU-l3dwLC21zMDZk36oOwi-J5WXzmMBxlIvKPMkg8htYt6lyzuExFA8YmF7DJkoB0etKK9ewfU5sp5aXJh67h_b8vktwXjCwIzbNRSCxfe9QeUfWJY921B5e9R3UglA/s320/photo-2.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I will come up with something later in the week for Friday's meal. I cheated this week, but that's ok. It just so happens that a lot of what you see is leftovers from <a href="http://www.sansaistl.com/">San Sai</a>, one of my favorite fast food places. I totally recycled my leftover lunch and made enough lunches to almost get me through the week. The far left jar contains some of the leftover salad with the addition of fresh lettuce of my own. Notice the bits of pasta, corn and other colorful veggies topped with greens. On top of that, I added some cashews to give myself a protein boost. The small jar on top of the salad holds cauliflower puree, which tricks the brain into thinking that you are eating mashed potatoes. With this particular batch I added some fresh garlic sauteed in a little olive oil, salt and fresh ground pepper. You may also add potatoes, just remember to use more cauliflower than potatoes to lower your carbohydrate intake. This batch only contained one potato and an entire head of cauliflower. Everyone loves this, including kids, provided you tell them after they eat the 'mashed potatoes'. We faked a lot of people out a couple of Thanksgivings ago and now they request that we bring the 'potatoes'! I'm such a liar!<br />
<br />
The next few jars contain brown rice and spicy chicken from San Sai. I will pair this with homemade roasted zucchini. Roasting vegetables is one way to pack more flavor without added caloric filled sauces. Simply toss veggies with olive oil to coat, add some herbs, pepper and maybe some balsamic vinegar. Roasting veggies will be your new love! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilX8WVW8oYMK-o2ACNf1csJv8KhHqXaM2EfbbK769zHcoreVgHRjmPYqC9bBDXPSdtVb23fsluNc3wsTSSmSWPiUmSwJDwDRK0EVsP8MtE1XEu-NsJcrwn08m__YG-pr5fEBuDYdEC72o/s1600/photo-bowl+of+San+Sai.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilX8WVW8oYMK-o2ACNf1csJv8KhHqXaM2EfbbK769zHcoreVgHRjmPYqC9bBDXPSdtVb23fsluNc3wsTSSmSWPiUmSwJDwDRK0EVsP8MtE1XEu-NsJcrwn08m__YG-pr5fEBuDYdEC72o/s320/photo-bowl+of+San+Sai.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The remainder of the white jars are filled with Honey Greek Yogurt, from Trader Joes. I proclaim it is the best yogurt on the planet. You can add your own fresh or frozen fruit or simply eat it plain. Yum!!! It is so much more economical than buying individual servings, and less sugar laden. Warning: 4oz is plenty for a serving. It has a tad more fat than I would prefer, but it's worth it!<br />
<br />
The benefits of using Mason Jars are numerous. It helps with portion control, cuts down on plastic, and looks pretty! I believe that aesthetics are very important, especially when eating. And sleeping. And living. Mason Jars are easy to transport to work and take up very little space. You may want to bring a bowl or plate to work, but for some of these you can eat right out of the jar. They are also easy to clean, however, I wash the lids by hand so as to keep rust at bay. <br />
<br />
Doesn't this look yummy? And to think how far I stretched this meal into the work week. You don't have to deprive yourself of tasty food or never go out to eat in order to eat healthy. This meal was tasty and satisfying. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Bon Appetit!<br />

If you are, this post is dedicated to you! Especially Lindsey, who requested that I write another one. That request came about a year or so ago. Briefly, there were technical difficulty. A plethora of technical difficulties too boring to get into. I'm over it!<br />
<br />
This post features this lovely key hook, constructed of discarded (trash) objects. The wood: trash! The hooks: trash! Some people throw away the most beautiful trash! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWeQyurJY3umO5lOexddmiX7_D2IJgRqVUpc328jOwCgHMhpy9U_DhscdQkakABh7mU3MFAunwO03P9lEl61hyphenhyphenqRiGgA2WlpoGXE3n4hzxlHhJr5nnQUK0OIBRrCXWUQqjYVhWahzoecc/s1600/three+hooks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWeQyurJY3umO5lOexddmiX7_D2IJgRqVUpc328jOwCgHMhpy9U_DhscdQkakABh7mU3MFAunwO03P9lEl61hyphenhyphenqRiGgA2WlpoGXE3n4hzxlHhJr5nnQUK0OIBRrCXWUQqjYVhWahzoecc/s320/three+hooks.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Now for the back story... Here at the Hess House, we have some members that have a little difficulty keeping track of his or her keys. I'm not naming any names, but let's just say that a certain person in this house got tired of looking for another certain person, or persons' keys. I, or should I say, a certain person would advise the other certain persons to make a habit of putting his or her keys in the same location every time they entered the house. Unheeded. Repeatedly. Soooooooo.....The hooks were born. Or should I say reborn. This took a lot of begging, but eventually a certain person made this out of a bunch of junk found in our dungeon. That's what I call our basement. Have you seen it? It's a dungeon! Tours are available upon request.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Check it out, it conveniently features 3 hooks, and 3 people live in this house (up until recently)! Notice the nice frame constructed by a very talented member of this family! Admittedly, the peeling paint is not for everyone, but I love it! It reminds me of the passage of time, and survival. If you can't relate, fine...you can go to the store and buy some shiny hooks and mount them near the front door so that you don't waist time searching for keys.<br />
<br />
But look, after all that begging and then the labor involved crafting this little beauty, one little set of keys hangs. One lonely set of keys, hanging forlornly on its prospective hook. Longing for it's fellow keys. Oh well. Attempts were made!<br />

I have inherited a butt load of buttons and I love each and every one of them. The other day, inspiration hit me and I commissioned my daughter to make something lovely. Inspiration, in our house, often results in a project for someone other than me. It's convenient that I have artistic and handy relatives (husband and daughter) that I happen to have a lot of influence over. Mighty handy, I tell you! I delegate, and that's the gift I possess and utilize until the cows come home.</div>

<br />
This is another favorite. I wore this the other night when I was having dinner with my friend/co-worker, Kim. People get us mixed up all the time at work and it's very confusing. Any way, I was wearing this flower and a man at the restaurant told me he liked it and it fit my personality. Weird, but I said, "Thanks, my daughter made it." I thought to my self, wow, this man knows his fashion! How hip of him! Then, my dear friend, Kim, walks up and he says, "Is this your daughter?" I composed my self, "She is practically my twin, we are so close in age!" What the hay? But, I am totally over it and apologized for flinging my sushi in his face.<br />

Lucky for us we also have a butt load of safety pins. Karri attached a pin to the back of these splendid creatures, and then I just pin it to my sweater. They would also look great on jackets and hats. I really need to learn to knit. Better yet, is there anyone willing to teach Rick how to knit for me? He practically collects hobbies.</div>

Nobody is paying me to write this post. I love my job, the company, everyone I work with, our customers, and moreover, I love our products! <br />
<br />
Today I would like to feature an unassuming, overlooked-product that will change the way you organize your refrigerator. "What?" you say. "Isn't that a bit extreme? Why should I organize my refrigerator?" Let me ask you this: ave you ever had multiple bottles of open catsup in your refrigerator? Have you ever cleaned out your fridge and a day later, no evidence of your labors? Have you ever stood with the door open looking for an item you were sure you had, only to find it weeks later ready for the science fair? Are you constantly throwing away moldy food? Dude, you need to organize your refrigerator! You are wasting time, energy and more importantly, MONEY, BABY!<br />
<br />
I am ashamed to say that I ignored this product until a customer asked for it and I didn't even know what she was talking about. When we finally located it on the shelf, I asked her to tell me why she liked it so much. I don't remember what she said, but I bought my first <a href="http://www.containerstore.com/shop/kitchen/refrigeratorFreezer?productId=10027634&N=74068&Nao=0">Fridge Binz</a> that very day. She was passionate and I was soon to supercede her enthusium.<br />
<br />

Check-out the obedient condiment soldiers, lined up, ready to battle the burger and fries. Notice the built-in handle? Super smart! The construction of these babies match the heavy duty strength of the refrigerator! <br />

Like items can be placed together making it easier to find the yogurt or Kimchee. No longer forgotten capers or spoiled leftovers to plague your food budget! You can designate a tray for lunch items, snacks, leftovers or whatever! An added benefit of the Fridge Binz is that if you're defrosting chicken leaks, simply pull the bin out and wipe clean. Without the Fridge Binz, a spill can result in a complete refrigerator clean-up. What a time sucker!<br />

A Unique Use For Quilt Scraps.If I had to use all my fabric stash before I entered the kingdom of heaven, the gates would rust while I worked my fingers to the bones. I have a problem. I think I'm over the acquisition phase, but I have trouble getting rid of even the smallest scrap of fabric, because I am sure I could find a use for it. My husband tries to slip little pieces into the trash when we are making a quilt together and I snatch them up and put them into my 'some day I will make something out of this' box. After all, they are lovely little treasures!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEindSLHL_5Y9Q_8vbcsA9nHj4qK00Ad6l9mAPKoigymEJ6TU-06rTzfoFVRFHIgeEVE3kQbk9ymwyZIZusjdcUyKZz07KVUXCRrujHrM0CnOeJzn5OTkk6uBD_oWxAaFCu539nHWsBWeyI/s1600/Picture+335.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" l6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEindSLHL_5Y9Q_8vbcsA9nHj4qK00Ad6l9mAPKoigymEJ6TU-06rTzfoFVRFHIgeEVE3kQbk9ymwyZIZusjdcUyKZz07KVUXCRrujHrM0CnOeJzn5OTkk6uBD_oWxAaFCu539nHWsBWeyI/s400/Picture+335.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Just look at these precious scraps! Now tell me you wouldn't risk ridicule over each and every inch. I acquired the green flower print from my grandma after she died. She was in the process of making a dress, which she probably started before I was born! She was the ultimate recycler! I could tell you some stories about my grandma and her husband, but I will save that for another day! Remind me to tell you about the collection of elastic saved from her unmentionables.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Soooooooo....what does one do with all this rescued fabric? I made miniature quilts, to be used as coasters! I asked my husband to make a little holder so that when they are stacked, it would evoke images of 'The Princess and the Pea' children's story. The wood came from an old discarded church window. Splendid Trash? No?<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I would rotate this picture, but I don't know what I'm doing! The remnants you see are lovely memories of little dresses, baby quilts, party napkins, pillows and the fabric I bought to make my daughter an outfit that never materialized. At least my grandma cut her pattern out. Oh my, I am sentimental~</div>
